Volunteering in has come a long way during 2005. Co-operation and partnership between voluntary and government organizations has expanded and strengthened significantly. More than 580,000 volunteers /70% of them young people/ took part in the annual voluntary Spring Week of Action and the GlobalYouth Service Day /GYSD/. They worked on more than 4,000 projects to benefit their communities, organized by NGOs together with government and business organizations. The economic benefit of the hours of voluntary support they provided amounts to more than 2 million dollars. Voluntary work is increasingly acknowledged by social and government organizations as a significant factor in the development of civil society. It promotes people’s active participation in solving community problems, reduces poverty and helps fulfil the Millennium Development Goals. To raise public awareness of the important role that voluntary work plays in society, to increase tits prestige and to encourage courageous, unusual solutions and novel ideas to facilitate more volunteering in Russia, the Centre for the Development of Volunteering in Russia /IAVE’s official representative in Russia/, together with the Sozidanie Fund and the Federal Social Support Fund /FCP/, have this year established the National Social Voluntary Work Awards. A Competition is hereby announced, the winners of which will receive diplomas and prizes at a ceremony marking the annual International Day of the Volunteer in . A conference, “Volunteering for social and economic development in the Russian Federation”, will also be held in in December 2005. The National Award was set up as an expression of public gratitude and recognition of the contribution that voluntary service makes to society, and to develop and support volunteering. There will be no monetary awards; our intention is not to give out material rewards. The competition is open to any organization, initiative group or individual. There are four categories in the Competition for the 2005 National Voluntary Work Awards: 1. Individual voluntary act For a person who performs a voluntary act in 2005. 2. Voluntary project For an organization or group implementing a voluntary project, programme or actions in 2005 using volunteers. Social support could be offered to children, young people, the elderly or disabled people in the fields of education, ecology, human rights, protecting animals etc. Voluntary project awards will be judged in the following sub-categories for: initiative groups, NGOs and social organizations, business organizations; social institutions, academic institutions, government bodies / local government organizations; mass media. 3. Management /organizational/ administrative voluntary actions For any organization or independently run group, whose staff members or volunteers manage or coordinate voluntary work /eg running programmes to involve people in voluntary work, or programmes to educate and raise awareness of voluntary work, marketing or publicizing voluntary programmes and activies, etc/, to increase the effectiveness of activities aimed at achieving the organization’s goals. 4. Volunteer Centre For organizations whose main work is the development and support of volunteering in a particular geographical area /local or regional/ of the . Additional special categories: "Essay on theme of volunteering" For the author of an essay giving his / her own view of volunteering , ideas for how to develop volunteering further in , specific examples of voluntary work and the basic characteristics and principles of volunteering etc. "An article on volunteering", published and printed in 2005 For the journalist or author of the article. The winners of the above categories of the competition will be announced as the competition proceeds.
Organisation the Competition The Organizing Committee consists of representatives from the competition’s founding organizations and has overall responsibility for the preparation and running of the competition. The Jury will consist of public figures, experts in volunteering and representatives from partner, government and scientific organizations. Terms and conditions of participation in the Competition 1. Completed applications for specific categories /organizational or individual/ must be submitted to the Organising Committee by 10 November 2005 /inclusive/. 2. The Jury’s decisions on the winners of the Awards will be taken in December 2005. The award ceremony will take place in a venue approved by the Organizing Committee. 3. Each individual or organization may submit only one application for each category. 4. Applications which do not comply with the conditions of the Competition will not be accepted.
